Spy shots and video of the 2022 Porsche 911 Sport Classic: the Carrera RS 2.7 legend lives on

Porsche has unveiled the new 911 Turbo for the 2021 model year, based on the latest 992 generation of the iconic sports car. The car is wider than ever and boasts a newly developed flat-six that spits out 640 hp in the Turbo S grade. Whether driven quietly or driven at the limit on the track, this is a great car.

These latest spy shots and video appear to be of one of the original prototypes of the 911 Turbo, but look a little closer and you will notice that this particular tester is different from the previous one due to its pronounced ducktail spoiler. This spoiler even has reflectors, which are omitted on the regular turbo.

The first Porsche to adopt this distinctive design was the legendary 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, and we have not seen Porsche use it since the 2010 911 Sport Classic. So Porsche may soon unveil a new generation 911 Sport Classic.

There is another possibility. The last Sport Classic was a limited edition model released at the end of the 997 generation 911, but the development of a ducktail-equipped 911 this early in the 992 generation makes us wonder if Porsche is planning a new option or even a new model for the latest Turbo family. Perhaps a Turbo RS?

Aside from the spoiler, the prototype is nearly identical to the regular Turbo model. It has a wider body than the Carrera model and new intakes on both the rear fenders and rear fascia. Brake rotors also fill the 20-inch front and 21-inch rear center-lock wheels.

Powering the regular turbo model is a new 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six, mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive system. The Turbo has a maximum output of 572 hp, while the Turbo S has 640 hp.

Pricing for the 2021 911 Turbo starts at $172,150 and goes up to $204,850 for the Turbo S. Prices for this ducktail-equipped sport classic, or whatever it will be, will likely be even higher.

It should make its debut late this year or early next year, i.e., as a 2022 model.
