GM's Ultifi software platform that makes it easier to update and upgrade vehicles
General Motors will begin introducing a new software platform called Ultifi to its vehicles in 2023.
GM said owners can look forward to a smartphone-like experience where regular updates can optimize the software running in the vehicle.
Ultifi will also allow for the addition of software-based features after the sale, and in some cases these can be linked to a profile and transferred between similarly equipped GM vehicles.
Cloud connectivity will also be a feature of Ultifi. Possible examples include a vehicle connecting to the home via the cloud to deactivate the home's security system or adjust the thermostat closer to the end of a commute.
Going further, the cloud can also connect your vehicle to the surrounding infrastructure to improve safety. Vehicle-to-everything communication with other connected devices and infrastructure will allow drivers to be alerted to hazards and changing road conditions and effectively time traffic signals. [Ultifi is designed to work in vehicles equipped with GM's previously announced Vehicle Intelligence Platform, which was developed to provide enough power for electrical functions and enough data bandwidth to quickly move digital information within the vehicle.
The Linux operating system is a "Linux" system.
Built on the Linux operating system, it was designed with outside developers in mind. This means that third-party software developers will have the opportunity to create new applications for GM vehicles.
"GM has decades of experience writing vehicle software and a solid foundation to build on," GM President Mark Reuss said in a statement.
"With Ultifi, we can continually improve our software and bring new features and apps to our customers in a short amount of time.
