Each Hyundai brand will utilize a new EV platform with a standard battery and motor.

Hyundai Motor Group has just unveiled its first model based on a dedicated platform for electric vehicles known as the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), but the Korean automaker giant has already announced its next-generation platform that will further standardize key components across Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have announced next-generation platforms that will further standardize key components among their respective brand vehicles.

The new platform, known as IMA (Integrated Modular Architecture), is an evolution of the E-GMP design. However, unlike the E-GMP, which has a different battery system for each corresponding vehicle model, IMA will have a standardized battery. The main components of the motor (five types) and chassis will also be standardized, contributing to improved production efficiency.

Another major difference from E-GMP is increased flexibility. Announcing the IMA at an investor presentation on Wednesday, Hyundai brand CEO Jae-Hoon Chang said the platform will fit all segments and will be used for both passenger cars and purpose-built vehicles such as delivery vehicles and shuttle vehicles for self-driving cab services.

Chang said Hyundai will launch 11 new EVs by 2030, and Genesis will launch six of its own EVs by the same date. Chang also said that Hyundai aims to sell 1.87 million EVs per year by the 2030 deadline. Meanwhile, Kia separately confirmed that it will have 14 EVs in its lineup by the end of 2027, including two pickup trucks and some dedicated vehicles.

Hyundai's EVs include three sedans, six SUVs, one light commercial vehicle, and one new model in the Hyundai lineup (hopefully a sports car). Two of the EVs we know about are the Ioniq 6 sedan, due out later this year, and the Ioniq 7 SUV, due out in 2024.

The Genesis will feature four SUVs and two additional models. Two of these EVs that we know of are the Electrified GV70 SUV and the Electrified G80 sedan; after 2025, Genesis will launch only EVs.

During his presentation, Chan also mentioned that the redesigned Genesis G90 will offer Level 3 self-driving capabilities on the SAE scale in select markets by late 2022, but did not provide further details.

He also noted that Hyundai Motor Group's Motional self-driving division will launch an automated delivery service with Uber Eats in Santa Monica, CA, also in 2022.
