The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV prototype goes into production.

This week, a prototype of Chevrolet's Silverado EV began driving on public roads, but Chevrolet got a head start on spy-shot photographers by releasing two photos showing one of its testers of this electric full-size pickup truck.

The photos show the Silverado EV undergoing testing at General Motors' test center in Milford, Michigan, and confirm that the production model's design will be true to the version unveiled in January at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show.

Sales are expected to begin in the fall of 2023 and will appear as a 2024 model. A related GMC Sierra electric pickup is planned for about the same time. Pricing for the Silverado EV is confirmed to start at $39,900 plus destination.

Both the Chevrolet and GMC will be built at GM's Orion Assembly Plant in Orion Township, Michigan. The plant is currently undergoing a $4 billion upgrade to support production of electric pickups and other future EVs.

The foundation of the pickup is GM's Ultium EV platform, which is used in the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyric. The largest battery is a 200 kilowatt-hour unit with a range of over 400 miles. Charging at up to 350 kilowatts allows for a 100-mile range with a charge time of about 10 minutes.

The Silverado EV is 233 inches long, about an inch longer than the current Silverado 1500, which is a crew cab and short bed. The trunk will be front-mounted, and a Multiflex tailgate can be selected to fit items as long as 10 feet in the bed.

The starting price for the Silverado EV will be a stripped-down WT commercial version for corporate customers. The top-of-the-line RST version will be priced in the six figures. It has a maximum output of 664 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque, and 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.5 seconds. It also boasts a towing capacity of up to 10,000 lbs. and a payload of 1,300 lbs.

Chevrolet said that despite the availability of a production version, 95% of current reservation holders expect to use the Silverado EV as their daily driver. In addition, 87% want an EV for towing and 72% want an EV that can be driven off-road.
