Maserati MC20-based track car, MCXtrema, debuts in Monterey

Maserati is about to unveil a wild new circuit car based on the MC20 supercar.

Previously known by the codename Project24, the new circuit car was confirmed by Maserati on Tuesday as the MCXtrema.

It will debut on August 18 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, one of the premier events of Monterey Car Week, which runs from August 11-20 this year.

Only 62 cars will be built, and all production slots have been filled.

Production is being handled by Maserati's Fuoriserie personalization department. In the future, this division may produce additional small-batch vehicles, including commissioned one-off models; the MCXtrema is a prime example of Fuoriserie's capabilities.

The MC20 has already produced a GT2 race car, but the MCXtrema is something else; the MC20 has already produced a GT2 race car, but the MCXtrema is distinctly different. The result is a design that is extreme to say the least.

Underneath the custom-built carbon fiber body sits the same Dallara-developed carbon tub as the MC20, but here it is fitted with an FIA-approved roll cage. The engine is a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6, taken from the MC20, but with output raised to 730 hp from the MC20's 621 hp. According to Maserati, the new turbo was a major upgrade.

Other features include a six-speed sequential transmission with paddle shifters, adjustable aero, adjustable suspension, lightweight Lexan windows, Brembo brakes, and 18-inch forged wheels with center locks.

Maserati has not released complete specifications, but previously hinted that the dry weight would be under 2,755 pounds.

Maserati plans to offer a complete program around the MCXtrema. This will include driver coaching courses, track experiences, and logistical support, similar to programs offered by Ferrari and Lamborghini.
