Mercedes-Benz Prepares Next-Generation User Interface Using AI

Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday offered insights into the next-generation user interface that will be rolled out over the next few years, against the backdrop of the 2024 CES.

Topping the list of features is a voice assistant that leverages artificial intelligence to provide a more personalized experience. As Markus Schaefer, head of research and development at Mercedes, explains, the system "understands the driver like never before."

It will be able to make helpful suggestions based on routines and change the style of conversation to reflect the driver's preferences and current mood. According to Mercedes, there are four core response types: natural, predictive, personal, and empathic.

For example, if the system detects that the driver is frustrated or in a hurry, it will provide shorter, more direct prompts. Conversely, if the system detects that the driver is in a good mood, it will respond with more conversions and a brighter tone. Visual feedback is also provided by avatars depicted as stars.

The next-generation user interface also utilizes the Unity game engine to produce graphics. The game engine's ability to produce 3D graphics is particularly useful for navigation purposes. According to Mercedes, this increased realism will allow drivers to clearly see where the next turn is.

Running the show in the background is Mercedes' proprietary operating system, known as MB.OS, which covers a wide range of vehicle areas, including infotainment, automated driving technology, comfort, powertrain, and charging. Because it is developed in-house, Mercedes has complete control over updates, upgrades, and the security of personal information.

The first vehicles to adopt MB.OS and the new user interface will be Mercedes' next-generation compact car series based on the new MMA platform. The first of these vehicles will be the redesigned CLA-Class, which was teased in last year's Concept CLA-Class EV and is expected to be available around 2025. Camouflaged prototypes of the new CLA-Class have already been spotted.

Mercedes also announced at CES a new immersive storytelling feature for its Dolby Atmos surround sound audio system. The stories come in the form of Audible or Amazon Music audiobooks, which require a subscription and create the effect of having a storyteller (or podcast host or singer) in the car with you.
