"Demolition Man" 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 surface for sale.

A 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30, featured in the 1993 film Demolition Man, will be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson's auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The 442, which will be auctioned on January 27, is a fine example of a classic American muscle car without the pedigree of the film; the 442 was Oldsmobile's entry into the muscle car field, introduced in the 1964 model year. Its name was derived from the four-barrel carburetor, four-speed transmission, and dual exhaust of that first model, but later models changed the formula slightly.

Oldsmobile kept the 442 name until the early 1990s, but the 1970 model was arguably the best of the 442s. In addition to its instantly recognizable styling, the 1970 442 could be powered by a 455 cubic-inch V-8 that produced a manufacturer-estimated 370 hp in W-30 trim.

According to the auction listing, the 442 was purchased directly from the General Motors Heritage Collection for Demolition Man. In the film, Sylvester Stallone played John Spartan, a police officer who awoke from cryostasis in 2032. Since the Spartan is an anachronism in his time, the 442 was the perfect vehicle for his car chase through the streets of "San Angeles."

In the scene, Olds puts a bullet through the showroom window before ramming it into a police car. Judging from the photographs accompanying the auction listing, the resulting damage was either repaired at some point after the shooting or another car was used to wreck the car. The car is being offered for sale from the collection of Frank Tiegs. It is one of 28 cars to be offered at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale.

The auctioneer has not stated how much "Demolition Man" 442 will sell for. However, the 1970 model's collector status, coupled with its Hollywood connections, will surely fetch a high bid.
