The Latest on the 2026 BMW iX Spotted in the Ring
BMW is preparing its first major update since the iX electric mid-size SUV was introduced for the 2022 model year.
A camouflaged prototype of the updated iX has been spotted again, this time with a video showing the prototype on the move; this video by Car Spy Media was shot while the prototype was being tested on the Nürburgring racing track in Germany. The changes to the exterior appear to be minor. The headlights feature new daytime running lights similar to those found on the latest BMWs. The taillights also have new graphics and new fascias on both ends; don't be surprised if BMW adds an illuminated grille option like the one they recently announced.
There are no clear shots of the interior, but it looks like some tweaks are planned there as well. We can see some of the technology planned for BMW's Neue Klasse family of EVs to feature on the updated iX, like an advanced heads-up display system.
It is not clear what BMW plans for mechanical updates. An extended range is possible, especially given BMW's recent advances in battery technology.
The iX is offered in the U.S. in xDrive50 and M60 grades, which will probably not be changed by the update. The two current grades feature dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrains with 516 hp for the xDrive50 and 610 hp for the M60. Both come standard with a 110.4 kwh battery and already have an impressive range for an electric mid-size SUV. Both grades have an EPA-estimated range of approximately 300 miles.
The updated iX will likely go on sale next year in the U.S. as a 2026 model. That is also when BMW is expected to launch the first of its Neue Classe EVs, a compact crossover that will likely be badged iX3. Its design was previewed in March with the Vision Neue Klasse X concept.
There are rumors that the iX may be renamed the iX5 with an update to link it to the X5 family redesign, which is expected around the same time. Prototypes of the new X5 have also been spotted.
