Toyota 4-Runner TRD Surf Concept with Removable Roof Returns

Toyota is likely to showcase one of its more intriguing vehicles at next week's 2024 SEMA Auto Show, the new 4-Runner TRD Surf Concept, which we previewed on Thursday.

The concept is a rugged 4-runner with a removable rear canopy. Toyota said it wanted to pay homage to the early 4Runners while exploring a design that would appeal to surfers, especially those who frequented the beaches of Southern California, where 4Runners were common in the 1980s.

The concept is based on the redesigned 2025 4Runner, specifically the 4Runner TRD Limited. However, many mechanical changes were required, most notably the change from a four-door body to a two-door body. Before starting production, Toyota practiced on the previous generation 4Runner. Once the final design was solidified, many custom parts were created by combining traditional fabrication with the latest 3D printing technology.

One of the trickiest parts to design and fabricate was the canopy, as the cut lines had to perfectly match both sides of the body to create the ideal fit. Toyota also wanted to design the canopy so that it could be easily removed and attached by one person.

Various upgrades were also made to the chassis, allowing it to conquer even the largest beach dunes. New features include a long-travel suspension with billet aluminum front upper and lower A-arms, custom front axles, and custom 17-inch wheels with 37-inch tires. The interior was also tweaked, with long-awaited waterproof flooring.

The 2025 4Runner was unveiled earlier this year and is expected to go on sale later this year. The recipe is familiar, but the old V-6 engine is gone. In its place will be the Turbo 4, which can be optioned as a hybrid.

The concept will feature a hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.4-liter turbo four and one electric motor to produce 278 hp. Power is distributed by a full-time four-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled dual-range transfer case; a TRD sport exhaust has been added to produce a throaty exhaust note.

The SEMA show opens in Las Vegas on November 4, and Toyota said it has a few more surprises in store.
