Chelsea Truck Company applies defender know-how to Ineos Grenadiers
Kahn Design's Chelsea Truck Company makes the original Defender wild and pretty much makes a name for itself. How wild? At one point, the British outfit had been churning out a six-wheeled defender pickup packing a 500 hp V-8s.
While the original Defender is no longer in production, there is a company under the name Ineos that offers very similar vehicles, Grenadier, and Chelsea Trucks are beginning to offer upgrades for it.
Chelsea Truck's latest Grenadier is an ultra-rugged version known as the Series II Expedition. Inspired by the company's wide-body defender, it features a 40mm extended wheel arch made of carbon fiber, a wide fender, a 30mm suspension lift kit, an electric side step and a 20-inch wheel wrapped in 37-inch all-terrain tires. We added details such as:
There are also design details such as the textured matte black finish of many add-on parts, hood and roof, and crosshairs of lights and exhaust tips. The rear wing attached to the roof completes the list of external changes.
For the interior, the Chelsea Track replaced the standard trim with red leather.
No changes have been made to the powertrain. Depending on the market, the Grenadier can be ordered with a 3.0-liter inline 6 engine with gas or diesel turbocharged supplied by BMW. Only a gas engine is offered in the United States, and the rating is 282 horsepower.
The Chelsea Track Series II expedition is available for 94,000 British pounds (aboutē“121,700). Many of the parts can also be ordered separately.
Ineos itself is preparing a range of upgrades for vehicles that the company plans to offer through its recently established Arcane Works Personalization division. Arcane Works also offers limited models from time to time, including Grenadier Detour, which is limited to only 200 units worldwide.
