2027 BMW 3 series with gas engine, Neue Classe Styling
BMW was found to be testing the prototype of the next 3 series sedan for the first time.
The current 3 series, the seventh generation of nameplates, arrived for the 2019 model, given the first update in 2023 and the second update in 2025.
The redesigned 8th generation 3 series is expected to debut in late 2026 or early the following year, meaning it is likely to arrive as a 2027 model in the US.The arrival of the electric variant will be tracked in a few months, and it is expected that the electric variant will be badge on the i3. I3 prototypes have also been tested in Public View.
The I3 will ride on BMW's Neue Klasse EV platform, which will debut next year with the ix3 compact crossover that forms part of the X3 family. Similarly, the i3 forms part of the 3-series family.
The gas-powered 3 Series uses an updated version of the current 3 Series CLAR platform designed for cars equipped with gas and hybrid powertrain. We expect the turbocharged 4- and 6-cylinder engines of the current models to be modified and taken over to possibly meet stricter emissions rules. The plug-in hybrid option will also be offered as part of BMW's plan to provide customers with a choice of powertrain.
Electric and gas-powered sedans will feature similar styling, but there will be differences in proportions to reflect different powertrain, the BMW Group's design new look was previewed last year with the Vision Neue Klasse concept.
Although there is no clear shot of the interior, BMW's next-generation interior relies on a head-up display and steering wheel controls are already previewed in some of the recent Neue Classe concepts, and the user interface is based on the infotainment system. It is expected to feature 1 head-up display to present important driving information and another for the system.
High-performance BMW M versions of both the gas-powered 3 Series and the electric i3 are also in the pipeline. The latter is expected to have a powertrain of 1,000 motors that delivers more than 4 horsepower. M's engineers have been testing the powertrain on public roads since at least 2022.
