Spy shot of the 2021 Opel Mocca X

Opel engineers are testing the next model change after its sale from General Motors to France's PSA Group in 2017. The model in question is the new Mokka X, the current version of which was sold in the United States as the previous Buick Encore.

The Mokka X is one of the most popular models in the subcompact crossover SUV segment; it was introduced in 2012, and now Opel is interested in replacing it. The arrival of the new model is confirmed for 2020.

Why such a rush to replace the best-selling model - when PSA Group previously announced its Opel restructuring strategy, it stated that it planned to shift the entire Opel car portfolio to PSA Group platforms no later than 2024.

The rapid restructuring is due to the Opel sale agreement between GM and PSA Group, which prohibits Opel from selling GM platform vehicles in markets where the GM brand is present; PSA Group is also required to pay GM a fee for the use of its platforms and powertrains, which it must pay.

Platform and powertrains

The platform for the new Mokka X will be the PSA Group's CMP (also known as EMP1) platform for subcompacts and compact cars. This platform, which includes electrification technology, debuted on the DS 3 Crossback and may be used on the Alfa Romeo Tonale due to the merger between PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

Judging by the spy shots, the new Mokka X will be radically different from its predecessor. It will likely echo the design of the Opel GT X Experimental concept, which was unveiled in 2018 as a preview of Opel's new styling theme.

It is still unclear what powertrains will be offered, but the lineup is expected to include both gasoline and diesel turbocharged inline four-cylinder engines. Perhaps an electric vehicle will also be offered at some stage.

The updated Mokka X is one of eight modernized or updated models that Opel will introduce by the end of 2020. Other models that we know of include updated Astra and Insignia models, as well as an updated Corsa. At the same time, Opel has discontinued low-volume models such as the Adam, Cascada and Karl. Here we saw the Cascada being marketed as a Buick.
