Tesla launches Track Pack, updates Model 3's track mode.

Tesla has announced a new package for the Model 3 Performance model that adds a number of attractive hardware upgrades.

The package will cost $5,500. The package will cost $5,500, including installation labor, and is exclusive to Model 3 Performance sedans equipped with the existing $5,000 performance upgrades.

The package is designed to improve Model 3 stability in cornering, braking and at high speeds and includes new 20-inch wheels with hidden nuts, 245/35 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and high-performance brake pads.

Deliveries will begin in April.

In an interview published Tuesday at the Roadshow, Tesla also said that all Model 3 Performance owners will receive an updated version of Track mode, launching in 2018.

In the original version of Track Mode, the Model 3 Performance's stability control, regenerative braking, and powertrain cooling software adjusted to specific situations, while the new version, dubbed Track Mode V2 allows the driver to customize these settings through the home screen. Yes, with a simple swipe of a finger, the Tesla can be turned into a true drift car.

Track Mode V2 also offers features commonly found in competing recorders. These include real-time brake, tire, battery and motor data, a G-force meter, accelerometer and lap timer, and the ability to set start and finish points. All data can be downloaded to a file via the USB port. Track mode V2 also includes the ability to save vehicle settings for specific tracks. For example, for tracks with many corners, a higher level of regenerative braking can be set.

Track mode V2 is currently being distributed as a free over-the-air update.
