A closer look at Foxconn's Pininfarina-designed Foxtron Model E electric sedan.

Foxconn, the Taiwanese contract manufacturer best known for manufacturing Apple's iPhone, is planning to enter the world of automotive manufacturing.

The company has already developed its own modular electric vehicle platform and is currently in the process of signing a contract to build Fisker and Lordstown Motors EVs at its Ohio plant.

However, Foxconn also plans to build vehicles for its Foxtron EV brand, which unveiled a crossover, sedan, and bus in Taiwan earlier this week.

One of the vehicles, the Foxtron Model E sedan (yes, we doubt Ford would approve of the name), was actually designed by Pininfarina for Foxconn, and Pininfarina has released a video providing design details. The video also shows pictures of the interior, which combines classic luxury touches such as wood and leather trim with new technologies such as digital screens and a facial recognition system to open the doors.

The Model E is positioned as a luxury sedan, but it also offers plenty of performance. The electric drive system delivers 750 hp, 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds, and a range of 400 miles.

The first vehicle to go into production by Foxconn will be the Foxconn Model T bus, which will go into production in 2022 and will initially be used in cities in Taiwan. Next up is the Foxtron Model C crossover, scheduled for around 2023, which will also be sold in Taiwan, but by local automaker Yulon Motor Group as one of its own brands. Foxconn has not disclosed when production of the Model E will begin, but has indicated that it may be the first automobile to be sold outside of Taiwan. The Model E is expected to cost less than $40,000.
